Outrigger Safety

Safety is everyone's responsibility!  All members must be familiar with and follow the Club's Safety Policy.  Be aware of weather conditions, capability of your crew and prepare accordingly.  Be sure to sign out your canoe and include your trip plan.  Safety bags must be carried on each trip and can be found in the sheds in Gibsons and Sechelt.  The Club has VHF radios that can be picked up at the Ritz Motel in Gibsons.

It is possible to capsize (Huli) an outrigger canoe by leaning right (off ama).  If the canoe huli's, it is important that all crew members are accounted for and understand how to right the canoe safely and in a timely manner.  Report all hulies to outriggers@gibsonspaddleclub.ca.  Huli practices are conducted at Armours Beach twice yearly in June and September.  All members must attend a huli practice annually.

Cold Water Conditions:

After a huli, changing to dry clothing is recommended. Each person should have a small dry bag with a warm hat and shirt.  Neoprene is good for the cooler months. Keep in mind that with no protection you will loose 1.5°C of core body temperature in 1 hour in 15°C water.  November - March, feels cold.  When paddling in the winter members must follow the Winter Restrictions Policy.
